The Civil War (1642-48) was fought between the forces of King Charles I and those of the English parliament. The war took place in two parts. The first lasted from 1642-1646, the second from April to November, 1648. It led to the execution of Charles I in 1649 outside Whitehall, London.
Under Charles I, siege money was made at a number of provincial mints, Newark being one of them. The original coin would have been made in 1646 during the siege of Newark castle.
