The conditions encountered during the English Civil War of 1642-1649 between Forces of the Crown under Charles I and Oliver Cromwells army produced coinage slightly out of step with the development of coinage to date.
In order to pay the troops and to allow the local economy to continue coins were struck from pieces of hammered silver plate. The lozange shaped siege crown has a crown on the obverse and Newark on the reverse.
The Commonwealth shilling has the a cross of St. George and the republican arms of England on it.
The two coins are held in clear plastic blisters and are supplied in full colour pamphlet style packaging, complete with historical information relating to the Civil War.
