John inherited the throne of England in April 1199 as well as the Plantagenet regions held in France, which he lost to the French in 1204. John's failure to recapture these territories, his dispute with the Pope, and a high level of taxation had the English nobility up in arms against him.
In June 1215, the English barons forced King John to sign the Magna Carta. Neither side complied with the Magna Carta's conditions and civil war broke out. Just five months later King John died.
