In 1926 Edward I invaded Scotland and declared himself King of that realm. His defeat by Sir William Wallace at the Battle of Stirling Bridge in the following year forced him to retreat. In 1298 he again invaded Scotland and defeated the Scottish army at the Battle of Falkirk. Wallace was captured and executed in 1305. In 1307 Edward set out for a third time to subdue the Scots but died en route.
In 1307 Edward II was crowned King of England and in 1314 left with an army of about 60,000 men in an attempt to lift the siege at the English stronghold, Stirling Castle. He came across a Scottish army of 40,000 men at Bannockburn, under the command of Robert The Bruce and it was here that the English army was defeated. In 1323 Edward signed a 13-year truce with Bruce.
