A stram locomotive is a locomotive powered by steam. The term usually refers to its use on railways, but can also refer to a road locomotive such as a traction engine or steamroller.

Steam engines were developed in the 1700s. Richard Trevithick build a working locomotive in 1804. In 1812 the first commercial use of steam traction was on the Middleton railway. The Rocket proved to be a design prototype for the Stephenson's but the locomotive that became the standard was Northumbrian.
