The first public railway, as we know it today, carrying passengers and freight, was the Stockton and Darlington Railway in 1825.
After World War I, economic pressures forced many small railways into decline. World War II took another great toll on the railways and on the state of the national economy in general. As a result, in 1948 the railways were nationalised as British Railways.
In the 1970's the Advanced Passenger Train (APT) and the High Speed Train (HST) were introduced. The HST went on to become one of the most successful and popular trains of all time.
