The sword underwent rapid changes during the first half of the 16th Century. Greater protection was given to the hand by means of a Knuckles bow to which was added wings to guard the whole hand both in verticle and horizontal planes. From this period onwards swords became increasingly decorative both in the handle and the blade.
This Elizabethan sword letter opener measures 18cm and has a steel blade with metal handle. It is antique siver plated and is supplied in a box with clear acetate lid and an information card.
