Civil War Cannon Product History |

|
Northern field artillery consisted mainly of smoothbore Napoleons and Parrott cast iron 10 pounder cannons, both of which were muzzle loaders. As the conflict progressed the Parrott became the standard Union field piece with a range of about two miles. Our model is based on the 24-pounder siege howitzer, which the North used for siege artillery and the defence of permanent fortifications. The Confederacy had a problem supplying heavy ordnance due to the lack of raw materials and skilled munitions workers. Sometimes logs were shaped like cannons in an attempt to deceive the enemy. These guns were known as "Quaker Guns" and were painted black versions of Confederate 6-pounder and captured Union ordnance. |
