Elizabeth I - Silver One Testern - Obverse - the royal arms - Reverse - a portcullis. This coin is known as portcullis money and was made at the Tower Mint in 1600/1. It was made for the first voyage of the incorporated 'Company of Merchants of London Trading into the East Indies'. 1533 - Elizabeth was born at Greenwich. 1558 - Elizabeth became queen after the death of her half-sister Mary Tudor. 1567 - Elizabeth's cousin, Mary Stuart (Queen of Scots), was forced to abdicate her throne as queen of Scotland. 1577 - Francis Drake set off on a voyage around the world. 1585 - Elizabeth made Walter Raleigh, the soldier, writer and explorer a knight. 1586 - The Babington Plot to assassinate Elizabeth I failed. 1587 - Mary Stuart executed after being implicated in a plot against Elizabeth. Sir Francis Drake destroyed 30 Spanish ships in a port at Cadiz. 1588 - King Phillip II of Spain approved an invasion and sent the 'Spanish Armada' to England. This was attacked and defeated by the British fleet. Sir Francis Drake, his cousin Sir John Hawkins and Sir Walter Raleigh all took part in this victory. 1603 - Elizabeth died and was succeeded by Mary Stuart's son James VI of Scotland who became James I of England. |
