Henry VIII - Silver Groat. Obverse: bust of Henry. - Reverse: coat of arms. This coin was minted at the Tower of London. When open debasement of coinage began in 1544 to help finance Henry's wars a second mint was opened in the Tower. 1491 - Henry is born in Greenwich. 1509 - Henry ascends to the throne and is crowned in Westminster Abbey. Henry marries his first wife Catherine of Aragon. 1520 - the ceremonial meeting between Henry and Francis I of France known as The Field of the Cloth of Gold. 1530 - Thomas Wolsey dies whilst being transported to The Tower of London on charges of Treason. 1533 - Henry marries Anne Boleyn who has a daughter, Elizabeth I. 1535 - Henry has his advisor Thomas More beheaded. 1536 - Anne Boleyn is executed on charges of treason; Henry marries Jane Seymore; the Dissolution of the Monasteries begins. 1537 - Jane Seymore has a son Edward VI. 1540 - Henry has his minister Thomas Cromwell sent to The Tower of London and he is beheaded on Tower Hill. Henry marries Anne of Cleaves but divorces her within 6 months and marries Catherine Howard. 1542 - Catherine Howard is convicted of misconduct and executed. 1543 - Henry marries Catherine Par. 1545 - The Mary Rose, a ship from Henry's fleet, sinks near Portsmouth. 1547 - Henry dies at Whitehall on 28th January. Edward VI becomes king at the age of 9 years old. |
