Aethlred II Unread (978-1016) - These times were typified by frequent Viking raids extracting the Danegeld from the Anglo Saxons. In one instance a Danish fleet under Olaf Tryggvason and Swein Forkbeard were bought of with £16,000 cash - 3,480,000 silver pennies.

Harold II (1066) - King Edward the Confessor died 5th Jan 1066 and Harold took the throne to become the last of the Anglo-Saxon kings. Harold was expecting invasion from Normandy but was forced to move north to defeat Scandinavian invaders. Harold then led an exhausted army to repel the Normans and failed to superior tactics and organisation. He was killed at the Battle of Hastings.
