Aureus of Claudius - Reverse                       Aureus of Claudius - Obverse

Aureus of Claudius - Obverse - bust of Claudius: Reverse - De Britann on triumphal arch. This coin celebrated the early stages of the Roman conquest of Britain.

Claudius was the emperor of Rome from A.D. 41 - 54. He was the nephew of the emperor Tiberius but when Tiberius and his son Caligula went mad they were murdered. The army made Claudius emperor because there were no other male heirs left in the family.

Claudius led the invasion of Britain in A.D. 43. He also extended Roman power in North Africa and was careful not to start wars with more powerful tribes on the edge of his empire. Claudius married four times. When he married his niece, Agrippa the Younger, he adopted her son Nero. Some historians believe Agrippa murdered Claudius so that Nero could become the next emperor.
