Robert The Bruce (1274 - 1329). Silver Penny. Edward I of England invaded Scotland in 1296 in an attempt to conquer it. The nation rose up in revolt. This culminated in the coronation of Robert the Bruce as King of Scotland in 1306, at Scone. Edward came to Scotland with a huge army of about 60,000 men in an attempt to lift the siege at the English stronghold, Stirling Castle. He was intercepted by a smaller army of about 40,000 men under the command of Robert the Bruce. These armies fought at Bannockburn, near Stirling, on June 24, 1314 where the English army was decisively defeated, losing an estimated 10,000 men. Bruce kept fighting for Scotland's freedom until 1327 when Edward III, the new English king, signed a peace treaty ending the war with England. Bruce died in 1329 and was buried in Dunfermline Abbey and Palace. His heart was laid to rest in Melrose Abbey. |
