Charles I - Tower mint sixpence (minted 1630-31).

1600 - Charles is born at Dunfermline Palace, Fife, on 19th November.

1625 - Marries Henrietta Marie of France on 13th June.

1626 - Charles is crowned at Westminster Abbey on the 2nd February.

The Civil War 1642-49.

1642 - Charles attempts to arrest five MP's, leaves London and raises his standard in Nottingham, Royalists defeat Parliamentary army at Edgehill.

1643 - Royalist defeat Parliamentary army at Chalgrove Field.

1644 - Royalists defeated at Marston Moor - the turning point in the Civil War.

1645 - Parliament under Oliver Cromwell creates New Model Army, which crushes Royalist army at Naseby.

1646 - Charles surrenders to the Scots, who hand him over to Parliament.

1646/8 - Charles negotiates with Parliament and conspires with the Scots to invade England on his behalf. Charles escapes and is recaptured and imprisoned at Carisbrooke Castle (1647).

1648 - The Scots are defeated at Preston.

1649 - Charles I is executed on the 30th January in front of the Banqueting Hall in Whitehall, London.
