Product History

George III Shilling: The reign of George III saw much change on the domestic front. The Industrial Revolution saw a transformation from an agricultural to an industrial economy. James Watt brought out his steam engine (1781) and started the age of steam power for machinery which led to George Stephenson building a steam locomotive, The Rocket, in 1829.

1765 - The first canal in Britain is opened.

1773 - The Boston Tea Party on 16th December saw American colonists throw chests of tea into the Boston harbour. It was a protest against the imposition of taxes and duties by the British Government.

1776 - On 4th July the Declaration of Independence was issued which proclaimed American separation from Britain.

1783 - The Montgolfier brothers made the first public hot air balloon flight using a model.

1801 - Gas powered streetlights became available in many towns.

1805 - Horatio Nelson defeats the combined French and Spanish fleets at The Battle of Trafalgar near Cadiz in Spain He is mortally wounded on his flagship, Victory, and is later buried at St Paul's Cathedral.

1815 - On 18th June the allied forces under the command of the Duke of Wellington defeat Napoleon's French army at the Battle of Waterloo.

1820 - Florence Nightingale is born.
