Oliver Cromwell - Shilling minted in 1658.

1628 - Oliver Cromwell enters parliament and becomes their leading general in 1645. He leads his New Model Army against Charles I and defeats him.

1649 - After the execution of Charles I outside The Banqueting House in Whitehall, a council of state was appointed with Oliver Cromwell as chairman. England is declared a republic and Cromwell defeats the Irish Royalists at Wexford and at the siege of Drogheda.

1650 - Scots Royalists are defeated by Cromwell at Dunbar.

1651 - Scots Royalists led by Charles II are defeated at Worcester, Charles flees into exile.

1651 - The Navigation Act secures trade monopoly for English ships.

1653 - Cromwell expels the Rump Parliament and becomes Lord Protector of England.

1654-55 - First Protectorate Parliament.

1655 - Cromwell dismisses Parliament.

1657 - Cromwell refuses an offer of the throne.

1658 - Cromwell dismisses the third Protectorate Parliament but dies later in the year aged 58.

1659-9 - Oliver's son Richard rules as Lord Protector.

1659 - The Rump Parliament is recalled and then expelled by the army.

1660 - A new parliament is summoned and negotiates the restoration of the monarchy. Charles II returns to England from Holland and is restored to the throne.
