Silver Penny - Struck by the Vikings of York in the A.D. 920's. Called St. Peter of York money by the inscription.

The Vikings were superb sailors who sailed in their longship across the oceans in search of land, slaves, gold and other riches. They set sail from their homes in Denmark, Norway and Sweden and raided across Europe, Russia, and the Mediterranean and are even believed to have landed in America.

Vikings usually fought on foot. Wealthy soldiers wore metal helmets and chain mail tunics while poorer soldiers had to make do with leather caps and tunics. Both would have used shields to protect themselves from arrows, axe and sword blows.

Front Image - This Viking warrior shows a clear level of wealth in his clothing. His trousers are of linen and his tunic is of wool. He holds a shield made from oak planks covered in linen and a sword with a Frankish blade. He also has a chain mail shirt, conical helm and a short knife in his belt.
