Campaign: Anglo-Boer War 1899-1902 Description: (obverse) the jubilee bust of Queen Victoria; (reverse) Britannia holding the flag and a laurel crown towards a large group of soldiers, with warships offshore. The words SOUTH AFRICA are inscribed around the top. This medal was issued to British and Imperial forces for service in South Africa between 11th October 1899 and 31st May 1902. It was also issued to nurses and war correspondents, which set precedents for later wars. The second Boer War (1899-1902) - Britain fought against the Transvaal and the Orange Free State, who had formed a military alliance in 1896. The Boers, equipped by Germany, never mustered more that 88,000 men, but defeated Britain in numerous initial engagements. British garrisons were also besieged in the towns of Ladysmith, Kimberley and Mafeking. The Boers were gradually defeated after British reinforcements had landed and after Kitchener (chief of staff to Lord Roberts) adopted a scorched earth policy, interning the civil population in concentration camps. |
