Issued to commemorate the Battle of the Atlantic, this star was awarded in the Royal Navy for six months afloat between 3rd September 1939 and 8th May 1945 in the Atlantic or home waters and for personnel employed in the convoys to North Russia and the South Atlantic. Merchant Navy personnel also qualified as did RAF and Army (air crews and maritime gunners) who served afloat or operated over the designated waters.

CLASP - If a recipient also qualified for the France and Germany Star or Air Crew Europe Star, then a bar with that title would be worn on the ribbon.

COVER IMAGE - The convoy system was used as a defence against U Boats. It was fist instituted in the great war and was used from the 7th September 1939 until the end of the war in all operational areas. During the course of World War II 366,852 tons of Allied shipping was sunk in the Atlantic.
