Tournament Knight - Circa 1520 Product History |
The Tournament began, around the 12th century, as a group event and this element (the tourney) remained throughout. From the 13th century the tournament also included jousts (single combats by mounted contestants with lances only) and, from the 14th century, foot combats. These mock battles were used both as a sport and also as a means of practising one's skill at arms in which injury and death were common. This knight circa 1520 is wearing a Sallet helmet topped with a crest. He is carrying a lance which was used to knock his opponent from his horse when the knights passed each other during a joust. He is dressed for a joust of war which was often run in fields without a tilt or barrier and with sharp lances. The armour for these contests tended to resemble the armour used in battle and shields were seldom used. Also available singly in a polythene bag. |
