The US army during the Civil War was the largest the country had raised and would remain the largest until World War I. Nearly 3 million men served in some branch of the US Army during the Civil War of which over 300,000 never returned. 199,045 men deserted, however many re-enlisted, some 183,287 died of disease, 61,362 were killed in action and 34,773 died later of wounds. This colonel wears the field grade officer's full dress with dress hat, frock coat, and the 1861 dark pants. His regimental number would have appeared on each epaulette, on a circle of sky blue, which was his infantry branch of service colour. He is wearing a regulation officer's sword belt on which is a foot officer's sword. Also available singly in a polythene bag. |
