Son of the Duke of Normandy, William was born around 1027. He proved himself a brilliant leader at the battle of Val es Dunes in 1047, but is best remembered for the Battle of Hastings in 1066 as depicted in the Bayeaux Tapestry. He was killed at Rouen in 1087 after a battle against the French King Philippe Ler.
