Before 55 BC the British Celts had been helping the French Gauls to fight against the Roman army commanded by Julius Caesar. In 55 BC and 54 BC Caesar made raids against Britain taking hostages and demanding money to be sent, by the tribes, to Rome each year. In 43 AD the emperor Claudius led the invasion of Britain. The Roman army landed in Kent and there was a big battle at the River Medway where the British were thrown back. The Roman army then went on to conquer Colchester and defeated the British in the south east of England. The Ninth and Fourteenth legions then marched north and west and conquered most of what we now call England and Wales. Front Image - Rome's greatest amphitheatre, the Colosseum, was commissioned by Emperor Vespasian in AD 72. Emperors and wealthy citizens, largely to gain popularity, staged deadly gladatorial combats combats and wild animal fights. The Colosseum could hold up to 55,000 spectators who were seated according to rank. Reverse Image - In 55 BC and 54 BC Julius Caesar made two raids against the Celts in Britain. In 43 AD the Emperor Claudius invaded Britain and soon defeated many of the Celtic tribes. The Celts tried to make themselves look frightening by combing their hair with lime and decorating their bodies with blue woad. Our image shows the Roman army attacking a Celtic tribe. |
