|||
|
On 14th October 1066 a battle was fought near Hastings between the English under Harold and an invading army under William Duke of Normandy (William I). The English resisted the Norman attack throughout a long days fighting but the Norman cavalry and crossbowmen were superior to the English soldiers, fighting on foot and armed with axes. Harold was killed and William marched to London where he was crowned King of England on Christmas Day 1066, at Westminster Abbey. This knight is wearing a chain mail hauberk with full length sleeves with a padded aketon or gambeson underneath. His helmet consists of a one-piece dome reinforced with iron straps and has been given a face mask. He is armed with a sword and a large shield for defence. |
