Signifer

Legio XIV Gemina

Product History

Signifer Legio XIV Gemina

Below the centurionate, the main officers were the pricipales. These include the optio, who was the centurion's second in command; the standard bearers, among whom each legion had one signifer for each century who also acted as the unit's banker.

This signifer is armed with a sword (gladius) and a dagger. He is wearing a mail hauberk and has strips of leather as protection of his thighs and upper arms (pteryges). His masked helmet is very similar to the bronze cavalry sports helmets and was probably worn to show the standard bearer's position as guardian of an object of spiritual importance. Animal skins were worn over the helmet with bearskins being popular with legionaries and feline pelts with Praetorians. He is carrying the century standard (signum) and has a small round shield, for protection, on his back.
