Old manuscripts such as those of Kells, Durrow and Lindisfarne reveal the designs of artwork that was used by the Celts. The Celts expressed their artistic genius in such art and crafts as metalwork, sculpture and ceramics. The Celts began crossing the English Channel about 500 B.C. and were the first invaders of England. Their art was copied by later invaders including the Romans, Saxons and Vikings and is still an important art source that is popular today.

The Cross symbolises the four roads. The cross in the wheel has been used as a symbol for the sun, and Christ's rule over all things - height, length, breadth and depth. The cross is best known as the supreme symbol of Christian faith. There are many fine examples of stone crosses and engraved slabs. These can be seen in many graveyards in the United Kingdom.
