 Interlace Pendant

The first invaders of England were the Celts. They began crossing the English Channel about 500 B.C. The Celts, a warlike people, were divided into various tribes. The earliest invading tribe, the Gaels, settled in the western and northern areas of the island of Great Britain. The second wave of Celtic invaders, the Britons, occupied most of what is now England and Wales. In 54 B.C. Julius Caesar defeated some of the Celtic tribes in Britain. In A.D. 61 Roman forces put down a revolt led by Boadicea (or Boudicca), a Celtic queen of the Iceni tribe.

The Celts expressed their artistic genius in such arts and crafts as metalwork, sculpture and ceramics (pottery). Celtic artists used combinations of curved lines and spirals, which were based on natural forms such as plants, animals and birds.
