 St. Cuthbert's Cross Pendant

Saint Cuthbert          A.D. 633-687

Born c633 A.D., Cuthbert decided to become a monk after having seen 'a great light and a choir of angels' descending to earth one night whilst he had been praying out on the hillside and then discovering the next day that the St. Aidan had died the previous night. Cuthbert undertook long missionary journeys and in 685 became Bishop of Lindisfarne. He died in 687 and his body was taken to Lindisfarne. In 995 his body was brought to Durham and building work on the first Church commenced. St. Cuthbert's tomb is still in Durham Cathedral, behind the High Alter.
