 Archaeopteryx Pendant

The earliest bird fossils belong to a genus (group) called Archaeopteryx that lived about 140 million years ago during the Jurassic period. Archaeopteryx resembled a reptile but was covered in feathers and so is classed as a bird. It was about 60cm long and ate small animals and insects. Unlike modern birds Archaeopteryx had teeth, a reptile like tail and three claws on each wing. It is believed that these claws were used to climb trees. The work Archaeopteryx means 'ancient wing'.
