|
The Stuker dive-bomber was armed with 3 x 7.92mm machine guns and up to 1000kg of bombs. During the first phase of the Battle of Britain the Stuka was used to bomb shipping in the English Channel. On August 11th during the second phase, they were used to bomb airfields, radar stations on the south coast and shipping in the channel again. The typical load carried for these sorties was one SC250 bomb and four SC50 bombs. The Stuka also had 'Jericho Trumpet' sirens fitted to the legs of its fixed landing gear, which made a terrifying noise when it dived to bomb its targets. The Stuka was very slow (268 mph) and became an easy target for the RAF. It was withdrawn from the battle in early August, 1940. |
