It was during the Industrial Revolution that the Victorian jeweller was able to tool up for mass production. Machines formerly powered by hand or water were turning over to steam and gas and the pace and scope of jewellery production was vastly increased. In spite of the growth of mass production and the demands of the market, skilled craftsmanship still played a very important role in the jewellery trade. The Victorian era was an age of prosperity and social change and more people were wearing jewellery and more of it. An early Victorian woman of fashion would have worn gold earrings and matching bracelet, a long neck chain with a jewelled or cameo pendant, gold rings and a jewelled tiara.

A cameo is an engraved gem with the designs carved so they project from the surface. Cameos are carved from stones with layers of different colours. The design is usually cut from the top white or light coloured layer with a contrasting, darker, bottom layer. Cameos are usually found in rings, brooches and other types of jewellery.
