In Tudor times the most common type of jewellery were rings, brooches, bracelets, necklace and earrings. These were made from gold, silver and bronze. Precious stones were also very fashionable and these included rubies, emeralds, pearls and sapphires. Rings were worn on all fingers including the thumb. Everyday dress of married women was dictated by strict convention. Dresses were always long with sleeves that reached the wrist, even in summer. Queens would have cloths made from costly fabric, often embroidered and studded with jewels.

Elizabeth I was the daughter of Henry VIII and became Queen of England in 1558. During her reign she had Mary Queen of Scots imprisoned for 19 years and then executed. Her navy destroyed the Spanish Armada of Phillip II in 1588 and she had Shakespeare entertain her court with his poems and plays.
