How Fossils Are Formed - When animals and plants die they decompose, or rot, but their hard parts, such as teeth and bones of an animal or the wood of plants, last longer. For these to be fossilised they must be buried before they completely disappear. After they are buried for a long time the sediment around them turns to rock. Over millions of years this rock is eroded and the fossil is then exposed to the earth's surface.

There were more than 10,000 different species of trilobites and all of them lived in the sea. Some crawled along the sea-bed while others floated or swam through the water. The name trilobite is given to these creatures because their exoskeletons are divided into three distinct parts or lobes.
