In Tudor times the most common type of jewellery were rings, brooches, bracelets, necklace and earrings. Precious stones were also very fashionable. They included rubies, emeralds, pearls and sapphires. These stones were set in heavy pendants, rings and on chains worn around the neck.

Henry VIII became King of England in 1509. Henry proclaimed himself Head of The Church of England and dissolved the monasteries. He had six wives during his reign in his quest for a male heir. Henry VIII was the first English monarch to have a navy and he also founded the Royal Armouries in 1515. He held huge banquets at Hampton Court Palace and imprisoned his enemies at The Tower of London.
