St. Paul's Apostle Spoon

Product History

St. Paul's Apostle Spoon

Apostle spoons received their name because each is surmounted by a small figure of one of the Apostles bearing the symbol associated with him. They were made in England in great numbers until 1654. A favourite christening gift in Tudor and early Stuart times, a set of thirteen would be given by the wealthy, while those of lesser means would give four, representing the Evangelists.
St. Paul was one of the most important leaders of early Christianity and became famous as a missionary. His letters, called epistles, to his followers form a significant part of the New Testament. Paul was so important that he was sometime referred to as an Apostle, though he was not one of the 12 Apostles of Jesus Christ.
