Information: Roman Empresses wielded significant influence in the Roman Empire, acting as advisors, political strategists, and even holding considerable power in their own right. They were the first ‘influencers’ regarding fashion after coinage was minted showing their hair styles and clothes. As the coins were circulated around the Empire these styles were copied by the wealthy women in Roman society.
Julia Agrippina (15 AD – 59 AD) was the sister of Caligula and Empress from 49 AD to 54 AD. Agrippina did not stay in the shadows but wielded her power in a more direct way than any other woman in Rome had done before. Her bust first appeared on coinage as the wife of her husband Emperor Claudius with his bust on the other side of the coin. This would make it unclear who was in power and show her importance and status. The coin on the front depicts her with a looped braid hairstyle, facing her son Emperor Nero.
Annia Galeria Faustina the Elder, sometimes referred to as Faustina I or Faustina Major (c. 100 AD – late October 140 AD) was a Roman Empress and wife of the Emperor Antoninus Pius. She was known for her beauty, wisdom, and charitable work. Her distinctive hairstyle, a braided French twist pulled back into a bun, became a popular trend and was copied for generations. This demonstrates her influence on Roman fashion and beauty standards.
Julia Domna (c.160 – 217 AD) was Roman Empress from 193 AD to 211 AD as the wife of Emperor Septimius Severus. She was a powerful figure in the Roman Empire and is considered a historical influencer due to her political, social, and intellectual impact. Her actions and patronage significantly shaped Roman culture and politics during her time and her appearance on coins influenced women’s fashion. The obverse of her coin depicts her bust with a multi strand braid.
